Drosera x "Lotus Eater"

from $25.00
Sold Out

Description

Drosera x “Lotus Eater” is one of the largest and most vigorous forms of Drosera capensis (though it may actually be a hybrid with Drosera aliciae according to legend). The robust and thick leaves have super wide lamina and can grow into extremely dense “trees” of leaves exceeding 8” in diameter. Compared to other large capensis varieties, the leaves are shorter, thicker, and more numerous. The growth rate on this variant is insane and it wants to eat substantially more than other sundews. Give it a huge pot since the roots will grow out the bottom in a short time. The true form is rare in cultivation and these are guaranteed to be the real thing!

Originating from South Africa, Drosera capensis prefers a mild climate between 40-100F. If temperatures drop very low in the winter, it may die back to the roots, but will readily sprout fresh vigorous growth in the spring. When grown outdoors, it will definitely slow growth in winter and then explode with bigger leaves in spring. While it can tolerate temperatures well above 100F, it prefers cooler temperatures. Highly adaptable and resilient, this is a perfect beginner’s species that is very difficult to kill. If fed regularly, it will grow vigorously and beautifully! Deep pots give room for the roots to grow and make a large plant, but they can tolerate all kinds of pots and soils.

Small plants will be ~2” in diameter in 2.5” pots. Medium plants will be 2-3” in diameter in 2.5” pots. Large plants will be >3” in diameter. These are thicker and more robust compared to regular capensis and will be smaller in diameter at a similar maturity (and usually holding more leaves too).

Growing Information

Climate: Temperatures from 40-100F, all humidity levels. These will naturally slow growth in winter, and can go fully dormant if cold enough. Frost may cause them to die back to the roots.

Light: Part to Full Sun or 20W per sq ft LED light. Does best outdoors or under powerful LEDs, but is adaptable.

Water: Distilled or Reverse Osmosis water. Sitting in 0.5”-2” of water using tray method. Drosera capensis can tolerate very wet conditions perfectly fine if given bright light. Only use distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater because tap water is toxic to carnivorous plants due to high mineral content and chlorine.

Soil: 50% Peat Moss: 50% Perlite. Rinse media with distilled or reverse osmosis water to remove excess salts.

Feeding: Feed leaves with Fish Food Powder every 2-4 weeks or more. “Lotus Eater” wants to feed much more heavily than other forms of Drosera capensis. Heavy feeding will be rewarded with massive growth. Can also be fed with ~200-400ppm MaxSea or Dynagro Foliage Pro by spraying on the leaves.
