Description

Drosera walyunga is an exceptional species of Pygmy Sundew with huge, uniquely shaped flowers that can range in color from pink to salmon to orange. The petals are “pandurate” in shape which means they are fiddle-shaped (basically they curve and widen at the ends). It is one of the only Pygmy Sundew species with giant pink or salmon colored flowers (most giant flowers are orange). The rosettes are attractive and flat with round lamina. It is prone to slow growth in summer but otherwise can be quite vigorous when grown well. This form has pale pink flowers with a red streak near the veins at the base of the petal.

As a pygmy sundew, it will produce ‘gemmae’ which are tiny modified leaves that appear as geometric circles of buds in the center of the growing point each fall. Each gemma can detach from the main plant and rapidly grow into a new plant (much faster than planting seed).

Drosera walyunga produces medium-sized gemmae. Adjust the photoperiod to be 9-10 hours in winter, gradually cycling to 14-15 hours in summer. They require proper lighting cues to produce gemmae and to flower in spring.

Plants ship potted in 2.5”W x 3.5”H pots. There will be multiple juvenile plants in each pot.

WINTER SHIPPING: Cold winter temperatures (<40F) require heat packs which will be automatically included with the shipment if necessary.

Growing Information

Climate: Mediterranean (SW Australia). 40-100F, low to moderate humidity.

Light: Full Sun or 20W per sq ft LED light. Pygmy sundews love bright light.

Water: Distilled or Reverse Osmosis water. Sitting in 0.5”-1” of water using tray method.

Soil: Well draining, sandy soils are best. I use a mix of ~50% sand, 30% perlite, 20% peat moss for many sand-growing species. Rinse media with distilled/reverse osmosis water to remove excess minerals.

Feeding: Feed leaves with Insect Powder every 2-4 weeks.
