Drosera silvicola
Description
Drosera silvicola is an incredible, large, and rare Pygmy Sundew. It is one of the largest species reaching up to 1.5 inches in diameter with thin, green petioles and curved lamina with long, red tentacles. The leaves spread out in all directions creating a ball of dew. Just the leaves make this a beautiful species, but it also has very large pink flowers with dark red spots at the base of the petals, contrasting with white edges around the red. It is almost like a pink-red-white form of barbigera (it was formerly classified as barbigera ssp. silvicola). Extremely rare in cultivation, and easily one of my absolute favorite species. It requires very well-drained soils like barbigera.
As a pygmy sundew, it will produce ‘gemmae’ which are tiny modified leaves that appear as geometric circles of buds in the center of the growing point each fall. Each gemma can detach from the main plant and rapidly grow into a new plant (much faster than planting seed).
Drosera silvicola produces medium-sized gemmae. Adjust the photoperiod to be 9-10 hours in winter, gradually cycling to 14-15 hours in summer. They require proper lighting cues to produce gemmae and to flower in spring.
Plants will ship potted in 2.5”W x 3.5”H pots. Each pot will have multiple small plants (3+).
WINTER SHIPPING: Cold winter temperatures (<40F) require heat packs which will be automatically included with the shipment if necessary.
Growing Information
Climate: Mediterranean (SW Australia). 40-100F, low to moderate humidity.
Light: Full Sun or 20W per sq ft LED light. Pygmy sundews love bright light.
Water: Distilled or Reverse Osmosis water. Sitting in 0.5”-1” of water using tray method.
Soil: I use a more granular mix for D. silvicola compared to other pygmies. My mix includes high levels of akadama, perlite, (and/or sand) with some peat.
Feeding: Feed leaves with Insect Powder every 2-4 weeks.
