Drosera gibsonii
Description
Drosera gibsonii is an exceptionally tall and slender species with beautiful coloration and lovely purple flowers. The leaves are on long, green petioles with curved lamina and bright red tentacles. It develops skinny stems than can exceed a few inches in height. It is almost like a tall cousin of Drosera lasiantha and shares many of its attractive traits.
As a pygmy sundew, it will produce ‘gemmae’ which are tiny modified leaves that appear as geometric circles of buds in the center of the growing point each fall. Each gemma can detach from the main plant and rapidly grow into a new plant (much faster than planting seed).
Drosera gibsonii produces extra large, hemi-spheric gemmae. Adjust the photoperiod to be 9-10 hours in winter, gradually cycling to 14-15 hours in summer. They require proper lighting cues to produce gemmae and to flower in spring.
Plants are potted in 2.5”W x 3.5”H pots. There will be at least 3 plants per pot. The last two photos are representative of the sizes you will receive.
Growing Information
Climate: Mediterranean (SW Australia). 40-100F, low to moderate humidity.
Light: Full Sun or 20W per sq ft LED light. Pygmy sundews love bright light.
Water: Distilled or Reverse Osmosis water. Sitting in 0.5”-1” of water using tray method. Drosera gibsonii prefers good drainage and less soggy conditions.
Soil: 40% Peat: 60% Perlite/Sand is a good general mix, though Drosera gibsonii does well with even more drainage. Rinse media with distilled or reverse osmosis water to remove excess salts.
Feeding: Feed leaves with Fish Food Powder every month or so.
