Drosera capensis is one of the most popular sundews with its large size, vigorous and easy growth, and excessive seed production. This species has long, strap-shaped leaves covered in dewy tentacles. The tentacles are very reactive to food, but this is also a species that will wrap the entire leaf around its prey! This form originates from Montagu Pass, Western Cape, South Africa and is one of the largest forms of capensis. It is reported to grow to 14-18” in diameter and has thick dew. The leaves can vary in color between partially red and mostly green. It is a beautiful form of capensis that is a standout in any collection. These have been grown from seed and are unique individuals.
Originating from South Africa, Drosera capensis prefers a mild climate between 40-100F. If temperatures drop very low in the winter, it may die back to the roots, but will readily sprout fresh vigorous growth in the spring. When grown outdoors, it will definitely slow growth in winter and then explode with bigger leaves in spring. While it can tolerate temperatures well above 100F, it prefers cooler temperatures. Highly adaptable and resilient, this is a perfect beginner’s species that is very difficult to kill. If fed regularly, it will grow vigorously and beautifully! Deep pots give room for the roots to grow and make a large plant, but they can tolerate all kinds of pots and soils.
Small size plants have leaves roughly 1-2” in length, potted in 2.5”W x 3.5”H pots. Medium size has leaves around 2-3” long potted in 2.5”W x 3.5”H pots or 3.5”W pots. Large size has leaves over 3” long potted in 3.5”W x 5”H pots.
WINTER SHIPPING: Cold winter temperatures (<40F) require heat packs which will be automatically included with the shipment if necessary.
Climate: Temperatures from 40-100F, all humidity levels. These will naturally slow growth in winter, and can go fully dormant if cold enough. Frost may cause them to die back to the roots.
Light: Part to Full Sun or 20W per sq ft LED light. Does best outdoors or under powerful LEDs, but is adaptable.
Water: Distilled or Reverse Osmosis water. Sitting in 0.5”-2” of water using tray method. Drosera capensis can tolerate very wet conditions perfectly fine if given bright light. Only use distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater because tap water is toxic to carnivorous plants due to high mineral content and chlorine.
Soil: 50% Peat Moss: 50% Perlite. Rinse media with distilled or reverse osmosis water to remove excess salts.
Feeding: Feed leaves with Insect Powder every 2-4 weeks or more. Can also be fed with ~400ppm MaxSea or Dynagro Foliage Pro by spraying on the leaves.
