Description

Drosera bindoon “larger European clone” is a rare Pygmy Sundew with large, orange flowers and black center. The rosetted are especially dewy and picturesque, growing quite rapidly in ideal conditions to around 1” in diameter. The flowers can be as large as the plant itself. I find this species has beautiful rosettes in addition to the spectacular flowers. This form grows larger than the “smaller Japanese clone” and is quite large for a rosetted Pygmy Sundew. It grows in heavy laterite soils in Western Australia and does best with a more inorganic and granular soil. The roots can rapidly grow out the bottom of the pot (>6”) so deep pots are recommended.

As a pygmy sundew, it will produce ‘gemmae’ which are tiny modified leaves that appear as geometric circles of buds in the center of the growing point each fall. Each gemma can detach from the main plant and rapidly grow into a new plant (much faster than planting seed).

Drosera bindoon produces medium-sized gemmae. Adjust the photoperiod to be 9-10 hours in winter, gradually cycling to 14-15 hours in summer. They require proper lighting cues to produce gemmae and to flower in spring.

Plants will ship potted in 2.5”W x 3.5”H pots. Each pot will have multiple small plants (3+).

WINTER SHIPPING: Cold winter temperatures (<40F) require heat packs which will be automatically included with the shipment if necessary.

Growing Information

Climate: Mediterranean (SW Australia). 40-100F, low to moderate humidity.

Light: Full Sun or 20W per sq ft LED light. Pygmy sundews love bright light.

Water: Distilled or Reverse Osmosis water. Sitting in 0.5”-1” of water using tray method.

Soil: I use a more granular mix for D. bindoon compared to other pygmies. My mix includes high levels of akadama, perlite, (and/or sand) with some peat.

Feeding: Feed leaves with Insect Powder every 2-4 weeks.
