from $22.00

Description

Drosera binata var. multifida f. extrema is a unique and incredibly beautiful Staghorn Sundew with over 32+ points on the highly branched leaves. Long, linear petioles split multiple times into a web of dewy, branched leaves. While the name is botanically invalid, it refers to the most extreme form of the Forked-Leafed Drosera binata which can exhibit up to 77 points in the wild. The antler-like appearance of the highly branching forms give them the nickname Staghorn Sundews (includes Drosera binata var. dichotoma and Drosera binata var. multifida).

Drosera binata is found in many locations in eastern Australia and New Zealand where it can vary from a single fork (“t-form”), to double forks (4 points), to over 70 points in certain forms. The leaves can grow to over a foot long and the plants can form clumps of dozens of huge leaves. Some forms require a winter dormancy, but Drosera binata var. multifida f. extrema seems to be more “subtropical” without a true winter dormancy. Young plants will only fork once into a “t-form”, but as the plant gets bigger it will progressively split more and more into 32+ points.

Small plants will have leaves roughly 1-1.5” long and ~1” wide in 2.5” pots. Medium plants will have leaves roughly 2-3” long and ~2” wide in 3.5” pots. Large plants will have leaves >3” long and >3” wide in 3.5” pots.

Growing Information

Climate: Temperatures between 40-90F are best.  These seem to do fine at different humidity levels.

Light: Part to Full Sun or at least 20W per square foot of LED lighting.

Water: Water with the tray method of roughly 1-2” of water. Only use distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater because tap water is toxic to carnivorous plants due to high mineral content and chlorine.

Soil: Soil can be 50% peat: 50% perlite, though most peat or sphagnum based mixes will be good.

Feeding: Feed Fish Food Powder or lightly spray leaves with dilute Dynagro Foliage Pro or MaxSea at roughly 200-400ppm. Feed every 2-4 weeks to stimulate strong growth.
